The methods

What each split actually means

There is no single right answer. Pick the one that matches the life you are actually living.

50 / 30 / 20

Half your money on needs, three tenths on wants, a fifth to savings and debt. The best known split, and a fair starting point if your rent or mortgage is not eating you alive.

70 / 20 / 10

Seven tenths on living costs, two tenths saved, one tenth for giving or debt. Realistic when housing is expensive, and it keeps a place for church, family and community giving.

80 / 20

Spend eighty, save twenty, and do not sweat the categories. If detailed budgets have never stuck for you, this is the one that might.

60 / 20 / 10 / 10

Essentials sixty, wants twenty, savings ten, debt repayment ten. The one to use when you are actively clearing debt and want it to have its own lane.
