Need help?

1 What are you saving for?

How much deposit?

2 What have you got already?

On a first home withdrawal you have to leave $1,000 in your KiwiSaver investment, and you need three years of membership. This calculator allows for the $1,000.

3 Is your KiwiSaver investment still growing? (optional)

Most employers pay the 3.5% minimum. Only change it if you know yours pays more.

4 What can you put away?

Be honest rather than hopeful. A number you can actually hit is worth more than a number that looks good.

Got a date in mind? (optional)

Fill in any one and the other two follow.

Start with what you are saving for, on the left.

This calculator is a guide only, not personalised financial advice. It assumes your savings and contributions carry on steadily and does not allow for interest, pay rises, or KiwiSaver investment returns, which can all move the answer. Lending criteria change. We recommend keeping two accounts, one for emergencies and one for the deposit, so the deposit does not quietly get spent. Book a free chat.

Worth knowing

Three things that catch first home buyers out

  • You cannot take all of your KiwiSaver investment. $1,000 has to stay in, and you need three years of membership before you can withdraw at all.
  • The deposit is not the only cash you need. Legal fees, a builder's report and a LIM all land at once. Budget a couple of thousand on top.
  • Under 20% is possible, and it costs more. Fewer lenders, a low equity margin on your rate, and a tighter assessment. Worth knowing before you set the target.
